Press Picture 1 New Press: Press Clippings - Image Gallery Quotes: "...strong debut" - New York Times "One stop from stardom...a new name triumph - a mix of urban folk and full-tilt rock." - USA Today "Shrewdly mixing folk, ballads and power rock, Rothberg distinguishes herself from the screamers by showing her spunk without the punk." - People Magazine "It's easy to hear echoes of Patti Smith...Rothberg sings as if the story was the most important part of her songs, and she's right...Best of all, she makes it seem so much fun." - Spin "...Well-crafted songs and an appealing grainy voice--think of a distaff Dylan." - Entertainment Weekly "The most inspired debut in recent memory." - Billboard "A perceptive, incandescent debut." - Philadelphia Inquirer Patti Rothberg Reviews: Here's a review for the Patti Rothberg/Aimee Mann Beacon show on the Tone and Groove website Patti Rothberg Interviews: More Quotes: "With more than four singles released to date, Rothberg's style of acoustic folk is finding fans all over college campuses and radio airwaves. 'My songs are about very personal issues,' says the Scarsdale native, whose junior year spent abroad attending Parsons Paris distanced her from suburbia and inspired the mature, diarylike lyrics on her CD. Since its release, Rothberg has toured all of Europe and opened for Pat Benatar, The Wallflowers and Chris Isaak. Confessing a '60s mentality, she distinguishes her young audience as a 'generation of people who want to relate to others and be close to them in an otherwise neurotic, standoffish world. I'm definitely into the microscopic view of things.' " - Victor Ramos "She was discovered playing her guitar for money in a subway in New York - strategically located between the 1 and the 9 (hence the album title.) Clearly not just another angry woman....one of the most talked about records of the year." - Aquarian Weekly "Tagged for inclusion on my Best of 2003, so great that I am often rendered speechless after hearing it. Amazing! Once in a blue moon, an album arrives on the shelves that literally defies all categorization. I genuinely prize such works when they come my way. Most often I have found that these albums are usually products of the female persuasion. Such items that come to mind are Area's fragments of the morning and Milla's The Divine Comedy. Well it's time to add another spectacular addition to the list. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Patti Rothberg's 'Candelabra Cadabra.' You may recall that Rothberg had a debut on the EMI America label back in 1996 called 'Between the 1 and 9' that received numerous raves. Now she's back with a new set of material that for all intents and purposes is strictly magical. And that's not really an adjective that I'd ever dreamed of using in a record review before now. Hearing Rothberg's music is like opening a giant storybook filled with enormous and colorful illustrations and diving in head first. Or maybe it's like an old lost book of spells that is at once both enchanting and ominous. Either way, this is the stuff dreams are made of. The dreams you have when you're deep asleep in the dark late at night. The dreams that sparkle and fade, gently pulling you awake in the morning. With Patti, everything is very grand. She paints minutiae with wide brush strokes that color your own imagination and keep you seeking more within her melodies." - Jason Thompson In September of 1997, Patti Rothberg had come off a whirlwind tour in support of her first album 'Between the 1 and the 9.' She played a gig at Acme Underground and met Freddie Katz, the house sound engineer. She heard his amazing production reel, and they got along famously. They knew they were destined to record! Their first recording together took place at Baby Monster on 14th Street in NYC with Lori Adams on bass and Yves Gerard on drums. Patti began live tracking at Avalon Studios in Douglaston, Queens. The engineer, Bob Stander is a brilliant sound technician and a mentor to Freddie. He was the perfect person to bring Patti's songs and Freddie's production to life! They called on the talents of several fabulous musicians to color the band's basic tracks: The Axis String Quartet, for which Catherine Bent wrote string arragements, Tom Brislin on keyboards/synths, Scott Gramlich who played beautiful and innovative sitar, Jon Michel played Dumbek (percussion), the infamous Jeff Saphin on background vocals, and their good friend Steven Bakur who arranged many background vocals and sang them, and said "You can dish it out but you can't take it" - Not to mention many others! 'Candelabra Cadabra's' CD booklet features all Patti Rothberg original artwork, a painting for each song title. Vanessa Johnson, friend and fellow Parson's alumni added her graphic design expertise. This new recording is a diverse collection of songs, due to the wide range of influences. The production is as varied. Patti wanted the production on this collection to clearly reflect the diversity of the songs. At Fez in New York City, James Maestro of Bongos / Health and Happiness Show fame approached Patti about his new label, Cropduster. He loved the new album and offered to put it out. Upon release of 'Candelabra Cadabra' into stores, Patti plans to tour nationally to support it. The touring band will consist of Dan Vonnegut on drums, David Leatherwood on bass and of course Patti and Freddie on guitars. Her record can be purchased online from CD Baby. More info: The compilation 'Revelations 2001' by Ron English - the incredible visual artist's brainchild features a new song called "Thin Ice." Music was co-written by Patti and Freddie to English's thought-provoking poetry. Other artists sharing the CD are Sexpod, Phoebe Legere, Daniel Johnston and a slew of others. This is truly a "religious" experience. If you are not familiar with the early days, Patti also has a record called 'Between the 1 and the 9' recorded on EMI Records. It is still available in major stores worldwide and here! For promotion of the record, Patti has performed with many extremely hip musicians, both in her own previous band line-ups and the ones she shared the billing with. Tours include Chris Isaak, Primitive Radio Gods, the Black Crowes, and many others. She has appeared on national (and international) television, Letterman and Leno, as well as live performances on Japan, Canada, German and Swedish TV! - Girlmedia.com |
